Summary of Treatment

Achieve safe and lasting results with SkinPen® medical microneedling

SkinPen® microneedling for acne scarring, stretch marks and skin rejuvenation is a highly versatile treatment that helps skin regenerate. The SkinPen device makes tiny microchannels in the skin, triggering the healing response. This treatment is effective all around, for pigmentation, acne scarring, pores, lax sagging skin, to fade fine lines and wrinkles, and to stimulate collagen.
It is customised using finely tuned needle length – from a quarter of a millimeter, mesotherapy serums that are introduced into the skin via the channels, and carefully chosen preparation and aftercare.

Ultimate microneedling technology for healthy skin

SkinPen® microneedling is the ultimate in safe medical microneedling and is the first FDA-cleared mechanical microneedling device. It is clinically proven to be effective in combatting the appearance of facial acne scars. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that helps minimize the signs of aging, improve the appearance of acne scars and rejuvenate aging skin.

Here’s what you can expect from a SkinPen® treatment:

  • A plan for optimal results. Your doctor may recommend a course of procedures based on your individual goals. Maintenance of your results might require multiple treatments.
  • 100% sealed cartridge, the only one on the market currently. This means zero contamination and total safety for you.
  • A comfortable experience. If required, you will have a numbing cream applied to the treatment area.
  • A short procedure time. The treatment itself will take 30-45 minutes (average full face).
  • A mild sensation. Most patients report feeling only the slight vibration of SkinPen during the procedure.
  • Minimal downtime. Your skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately post-procedure, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. Additionally, the most common treatment responses experienced were dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching, peeling, discomfort, tenderness, and burning. These conditions resolved over time without any further complications.
  • Soothing aftercare. Your clinician will provide Skinfuse® LIFT, a clean, non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment.
  • An effective post-procedure protocol. Your provider might recommend an aftercare regimen specifically formulated to support your skin following microneedling.

What does SkinPen® do?

SkinPen® (microneedling/collagen induction therapy) restores your skin’s natural architecture. This consists of collagen, elastin, and extracellular matrix, which form the support framework of your skin, just like the springs support a mattress. The same way a mattress sinks as the springs wear out, your skin develops fine lines, wrinkles, laxity as your collagen and elastin get depleted.

Microneedling helps us tap into the skin’s repair mechanism but without an actual injury. We are tricking the skin into thinking its injured with a MICROinjury which turns on the repair process resulting in healthy collagen and elastin structures being produced.

The skin regeneration process needs to be supported and maintained for 4-6 weeks before results become visible on the surface. During this time, you will be advised on how best to protect and nurture your skin.

Studies have shown microneedling to boost collagen production by up to 300% over a course of 3-6 treatments.

How does Microneedling work?

SkinPen by Bellus Medical is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device.

It causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimizing cellular damage. The result is effective remodeling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact.

There are three phases to the wound-repair process:

  • Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
  • Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
  • Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

Best of all, SkinPen works. 90% of subjects in the clinical trial would recommend the procedure to family and friends

The course of treatment will be determined by your skincare professional based upon your individual treatment goals and the health of your skin. Most patients receive a series of three treatments spaced about four weeks apart. For patients with more severe skin issues, additional sessions may be necessary.

Most people notice healthier-looking skin immediately, and the natural repair process of the skin continues to progress over the course of several weeks. Dermal collagen remodeling takes place over time, and it will continue to improve for up to six months after your final treatment.

Immediately following the treatment, you will notice a healthy pink glow. Your skincare professional will recommend products to you to aid your skin’s natural healing process. Total healing time depends on the severity of the damaged skin and the depth of the repair process required. On average, patients are pink for two to four days. Some patients completely heal in 24 hours.

Numbing gel is applied to the skin one hour prior to the procedure. Then, the face is cleansed and a thin layer of serum is applied to the skin, and the appropriate treatment is selected for a particular type of skin. The pen is then glided across the repair area in a gentle motion.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s clearance covers not only the SkinPen device but the entire protocol. That includes the Skinfuse® Lift HG hydrogel used to protect against abrasion and friction during the treatment, as well as the custom-designed BioSheath to prevent cross contamination.

SkinPen should not be used on patients who have active skin cancer in the treatment area(s); open wounds, sores, or irritated skin in the treatment area(s); an allergy to stainless steel or anesthetics; a bleeding disorder or disordered clotting; are pregnant or nursing; or are currently taking drugs with the ingredient isotretinoin (such as Roaccutane).

One of the best things with SkinPen is that it can be used on all types of skin for a wide range of problems, including acne scars and any area requiring cell regeneration or an intense repair process.

Yes, by design. SkinPen’s patent-pending – and single-use – sterile needle cartridge is built with safety in mind. SkinPen is also surrounded by a proprietary BioSheath that acts as a barrier to prevent cross contamination between procedures. No other manufacturer can make that claim, which is part of the reason SkinPen by Bellus Medical is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device.

SkinPen creates hundreds to thousands of “micro” skin punctures per second to stimulate the skin’s natural wound healing process – inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This enables tissue remodeling without causing scar tissue formation. Most patients can return to normal activities within 24 hours.
